Princip funkce paintballové zbraně - semi automat
Pokud by někdo chtěl zařadit painballové značkovací zbraně do některé ze tříd podle kterých se rozdělují klasické zbraně, patřily by rozhodně mezi zbraně plynové. Zdrojem jejich energie je stlačený plyn, většinou oxid uhličitý, někdy však také atmosférický vzduch nebo dusík. Rozhodně nepraktičtějším hnacím mediem je však oxid uhličitý a proto také patří mezi nejpoužívanější. Jeho hlavní výhodou je možnost přechovávání v kapalném stavu a díky tomu schopnost udržet stálý tlak i po mnoha výstřelech. Při každém výstřelu je sice spotřebována část plynu a klesne tlak v zásobníku, ale tato ztráta je vždy nahrazena odpařením části zkapalněného plynu. Díky tomu je až do spotřebování zkapalněné části plynu v tlakové nádobě udržován stále stejný tlak. Zbraně používající jako pohonné medium stlačený vzduch, který se ani při vysokých tlacích nemění na kapalinu,řeší tento problém redukčním ventilem, který zajišťuje přívod stálého tlaku do zbraně.
První paintballové zbraně měly velmi jednoduchou funkci a tlak plynu zde byl používán pouze k vystřelení střely z hlavně, v tomto případě želatinové kapsle naplněné barvivem.Časem však byly vyvinuty nové poloautomatické systémy a dnešní závodní zbraně jsou založeny většinou na patentem chráněných principech, používaných pouze u paintballových zbraní.
Mezi jednodušší typy patří paintballové zbraně zvané „pump action“. Tyto zbraně používají stlačený plyn pouze k vystřelení paintballové kuličky z hlavně a před každým výstřelem je hráč musí znovu mechanicky nabít. Jejich výhodou je malá poruchovost a nižší pořizovací cena, přesto však mezi hráči rozhodně převládají spíše zbraně se složitějším mechanismem, patřící do kategorie „semi automatic“. Tyto zbraně využívají tlaku plynu jak k výstřelu, tak i k nabití, a mezi hráči jsou díky své jednoduché obsluze během hry velmi oblíbené.
Každá paintballová zbraň se skládá z hlavně, těla zbraně ve kterém je uložena mechanická část a odnímatelné tlakové nádoby, sloužící často zároveň jako pažba. Rozdíl mezi jednotlivými typy zbraní je pouze ve složitosti mechanické části.
Připravit zbraň do střelbyschopného stavu je velmi jednoduché. Hráč nejprve našroubuje na zbraň tlakovou nádobu, která je uzavřena ventilem. Po jeho otevření stlačený plyn prochází tlakovou hadicí nebo kanálkem až do tlakové komory ve zbrani. Před prvním výstřelem hráč nejprve natáhne do zadní polohy bicí závaží, spolu s ním se posune do zadu i závěr hlavně a ze zásobníku se nabije jedna paintballová kulička. Po zmáčknutí spouště vymrští stlačená pružina bicí závaží proti ventilu uzavírajícímu tlakovou komoru. Spolu s pohybem bicího závaží vpřed se zavře závěr a zasune kuličku do hlavně.
Po dopadu bicího závaží se na krátkou chvíli otevře ventil uzavírající tlakovou komoru,část plynu vnikne kanálkem do hlavně a vymete střelu, druhá část zatlačí bicí závaží zpět proti pružině a znovu zbraň nabije. Dalším zmáčknutím spouště se pak celý postup opakuje.
Kadence střelby závisí na mnoha faktorech, ale u dokonalých závodních zbraních umožňuje mechanika teoreticky často i více než deset ran za sekundu.
